I love what I do. I help a variety of organizations improve their digital presence and build community.
Primarily, I’m one of two multimedia specialists at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pa. In this role, I support the web presence of our college’s research and education missions on both the Liferay and WordPress CMS platforms, but more importantly, I support our faculty and staff, helping them find the best ways to tell their stories and promote the work they do. I am also proud to be part of Penn State’s University-level Web Liaisons and Accessibility Users Group accessibility teams, ensuring our information is available to all.
I’m also a columnist for my hometown news provider, the York (Pa.) Daily Record/Sunday News, where I previously worked full-time for 15 years. I write regularly about life in our town on my Only in York County website, and in a weekly print column.
In addition, I co-run Technical Penguins, a full-scale web agency providing content, development, design and “assorted internetery” services. We focus on long-term relationships with large entities in the education and social service space, but are sometimes available for smaller projects as well.
Most fun of all, our family also runs a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization called Pengins for Everyone. Its sole mission is to give away stuffed penguins to people who need a smile. So far, we’ve given away more than 800 stuffed friends and have a request queue of more than 21,000. So, you know, donations welcome.
And, just for fun, I recently earned my master’s degree in public health preparedness from Penn State, graduating in May 2019 with a 4.0 GPA. My graduate thesis focused on the co-incidence of Boko Haram terrorist activity and Lassa virus in Nigeria in 2017, 2018 and 2019, and I was selected to share it at the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine conference in May 2019 in Brisbane, Australia. Read about it here, if you’re into that sort of thing. My next goals are to publish this research in the academic press and to start some new research in public health, and I’m very open to consulting and collaboration opportunities.
Other fun stuff I’ve done:
- 2012 to 2018: Created and maintained Unschool Rules, our family’s website about our radical unschooling lifestyle, and served as member and editor for the iHomeschool Network.
- 2013 to 2017: Provided first-line customer service for the Pippity WordPress plugin developed by Nicky Hajal.
- 2011 to 2014: Served as writer, editor and manager for Man Vs. Debt, a personal finance and lifestyle design brand owned by Adam Baker. The site and its You Vs. Debt course helped a thriving community of thousands improve their lives under the motto “Sell your crap. Pay off your debt. Do what you love.” While those sites are no longer active, I’m proud to have been a part of the MvD worldwide community.
- 2006 to 2011: Led Weight Watchers meetings (now called WW workshops) across central Pennsylvania.
